What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles within the pelvis that support the pelvic organs and control bowel and bladder function. If these muscles are injured, weakened, or unable to contract properly, a condition known as Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, one or more of the following issues may be experienced: leaky bladder, incontinence, constipation, pain during intercourse, or pain in the lower back, pelvic region, genitals, or rectum. Common pelvic floor problems include:
- Bladder control problems – leaking of urine when laughing, coughing, sneezing; feeling the need to urinate frequently or urgently
- Bowel control problems – leaking of stool with or without awareness
- Pelvic organ prolapse – the pelvic organs may extend into the vagina or even protrude from the vagina or anus
What causes pelvic floor dysfunction?
A weakened or poorly functioning pelvic floor may result from:
- Pregnancy/childbirth
- Pelvic surgery
- Being overweight
- Advancing age
- Overuse – pushing too hard when voiding or voiding too frequently
What is pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic floor therapy, sometimes called pelvic rehab, is a specialized program designed to engage and rehabilitate the muscles of the pelvic floor to lessen or resolve the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Ideally, pelvic floor therapy is delivered by a physical therapist with specialized training in pelvic floor anatomy and function.
